The legend of the “Capitana Pirate”

It was our son Leo, who at a very young age at school, learned and enthusiastically told us about the legend of the Pirate and his bride, after whom the place where our B&B is located was named, and who gave us the inspiration for choosing this name ….

Nearby stands the Nuraghe Diana, from which there is a wide and breathtaking view of the Gulf of Cagliari, that is the most important archaeological evidence of Quartu Sant’Elena dating back to the second millennium B.C., and also used during World War II as a watchtower.

The Nuraghe Diana is the background for our legend.

Around the year one thousand, during the raids of Saracen pirates around the Mediterranean Sea, a crew, that was led by the dreaded pirate Captain Mujahid, landed on the coast of Quartu to plunder and conquer the place.

Here, the cruel pirate fell madly in love with a young, beautiful and gentle woman, who at the beginning was his slave but then became his bride, his companion of raids and his faithful ally. The locals, who respected and loved this woman for her generosity, started to call her the “Pirata Capitana”

However, soon, the pirate had to return to his raids by the sea and had to leave his beloved bride on mainland. He wanted to keep her safe from danger and wanted her as the guardian of his precious treasure, waiting for his return.

But the Capitana will never see her beloved pirate again; she will wait for him forever on the cliff in front of the Nuraghe Diana.

According to the legend, even today, the wind that blows on the coast of Quartu, mixed with the sound of the waves crashing on the rocks of Is Mortorius, joins the cry of the Capitana, still waiting for her beloved pirate.

And it is right here, nearby the nuragic site, that according to the legend there is hidden treasure, sought in vain over the years with frantic excavation activity where the nuraghe stands, causing considerable damage to the nuragic heritage.

We like to think that the most precious treasure was the eternal love between the pirate and his Capitana, which still lives today in the wonders of the landscape that the Capitana coast gives us with its colors, from dawn to dusk.
